Blogging Uses in the Classroom

To take advantage of the enhanced capabilities of blog, the many uses of blogs need to be examined. Communication is a major use of blogs. In the classroom, blogs can be used for a variety of communication-related activities.  Additionally, blogs can be used by students to provide feedback on each others' writing. For the teacher, the blog can be used to inform students and parents about classroom activities and assignments. Students can access the blog from basically any Internet accessed device for updating, commenting, and revising. Parents can do the same to check posts, make their own comments, and communicate with teachers. Teachers can communicate with students about their assignments, whether it is grading, posting, or discussing.

As a step up from merely communicating, blogs in the classroom can be well used as instructional resources. In the most basic sense, many writing assignments can be completed on blogs: journals, notes, essays. More specifically, teachers can use blogs to teach. Teachers can post notes, links, or instructional videos for students to watch; other peoples' blogs, both students' and outside writers, can be discussed and studied as writing resources.

A key aspect of a well-rounded education is interaction. With the communicative use of blogs in the classroom, they serve well as collaborative tools. Many blog platforms have group capability, widening the possibilities for the instructional practices of blogs.

Whether in group or individual form, blogs also provide a solid medium for showcases of student projects. In a publishing format, it provides a place for students to present their work to the class and the teacher, but also to a wider audience.

Together, these uses of bloggings can create engaging and beneficial learning opportunities for all students. This variety of possibilities keeps everyone involved, resulting in an advanced learning community.
